3. "Material Girl"
Another 1985 release, and Madonna's second hit song, it quickly became and has largely remained her signature tune. Madonna has often said she regrets recording the song, because it became her nickname, and the song's lyrics paint the picture of a rather greedy girl. But the memorable video, one of the greatest videos of all time in our humble opinion, finds her fighting that image by falling for the guy who brings her simple gifts and takes her on a date in his dusty old pickup truck. The video also features one of the most iconic images of the '80s, that of Madonna in her bright pink gown, dancing in homage to Marilyn Monroe's performance of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" from the 1953 movie
Gentleman Prefer Blondes.
Sample lyrics:
"Some boys kiss me, some boys hug me
I think they're okay
If they don't give me proper credit
I just walk away."
"They can beg and they can plead
But they can't see the light, that's right
'Cause the boy with the cold hard cash
Is always mister right, cause we are
Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl."
