BQA: Taming Rebel Hair

Blowing your hair dry straight doesn't have to take all day. (HONEST!)

TAMING REBEL HAIR: GETTING STRAIGHT HAIR IS POSSIBLE. HONEST.

Blowdrying curly hair straight is mostly about patience and a large, round, natural-bristled brush. Work in two- to three-inch sections, and pull each section straight as you dry it. The biggest trick: Don't stop until each section of hair is totally dry from roots to ends.

DOS AND DON'TS TO LIVE BY.

GOING STRAIGHT:

  • Do aim the blowdryer's airflow down the hair shaft when straightening.
  • Do use a heat protectant spray like Redken Airset Heat Styling Protectant or Clairol Condition 3-in-1 Hot Styler to protect hair from heat, and try a leave-in conditioner like Sebastian Potion 9 if your hair feels dry.
  • Do deep condition regularly if you blow out curls often.
  • Do start with wet hair it'll be smoother and shinier; use a water-filled spritzer bottle filled to rewet as needed.
  • Don't go crazy with the heat. "You don't have to blowtorch your hair to get it straight," says Gerard. Use medium heat and the highest speed, and keep the dryer moving slightly to minimize damage.
  • Do consider a gentle salon relaxing treatment if curls are very tight and frizzy, suggests Lenny LaCour, owner of Salon LaCour in Chicago. "You'll get softer waves that are a cinch to blow out." One to ask for: Rusk Radical Anti-Curl, a salon-only relaxer that's a favorite of stylists across the country.
  • Don't chemically relax hair at home, it's much trickier than perming and disasters like hair breakage are common, warns LaCour.
  • Don't even think of going straight when the weather is blustery and wet. Mother Nature will undo all your hard work in an instant.
