Go easy with heat styling.
Limit using hot rollers and curling irons to a few times a week. After a while, they can really dry hair out, which sets you up for split-ends galore. Hold blowdryer at least six inches from hair-any closer can cause serious damage. Also, buffer the heat's effects with a protective spray like Neutrogena Heat Safe or Redken Hot Sets Thermal Styling Spray, and try a weekly deep-conditioning treatment (like L'Oreal Hydravive Performance Deep Hydrating Masque or Salon Selectives Deep Replenishing Treatment) to restore softness and shine.
Deep-clean weekly.
If you use lots of styling products, swim a lot or use hard water to wash your hair, (it can leave dulling mineral deposits on your hair), then use a clarifying shampoo once a week to get rid of hair-dulling buildup. "It's like giving hair a facial once a week," says Rocky Lyons. Try: Origins No Deposit Shampoo or Clairol Herbal Essence Clarifying Shampoo. Or, make your own buildup banishing rinse: Mix 1/4 cup of white vinegar with two liters of warm water. Pour it through wet hair, then shampoo.
