Hair-Envy Solution #4
From Thin To Full Locks
AT-HOME FIX: Great hair-plumpin' products can take your hair from thin to thick--quick! Combine products to really see a difference, says James Morrison, artistic director of Toni & Guy Salons. Mixing a mousse and a thickening solution, for example (like Rusk Thick Tigi Essensuals Thickening Cream or John Frieda Thickening Lotion), doubles the plumping potential.
Apply the mousse all over wet hair, then smush up the thickening lotion in the palm of your hand, apply it from the roots to the ends of your hair and comb through. Blowdrying's a must: It activates the thickening lotion and--when you use a large round brush as you blowdry--locks in the volume.
If you have fine, straight hair, try scrunching it when it's damp, cupping your hand loosely around the ends, then working toward the crown of your head. This will give you a pouffed 'do.
Apply conditioner and a body-building product daily to give your hair some lift. Try a product like Finesse Bodifying Adjusting Conditioner.
SALON SOLUTION: Fake fullness by getting a new haircut. Medium-fine hair perks up when it's cut in long layers. But if you really want body via a haircut, you'll have to go--gasp!--shorter.
If that's out of the question, consider highlights, which create the illusion of thicker hair by layering on contrasting colors.
Color glosses, which enrich your natural hue or come in clear shades, can also pump up the volume, according to New York City colorist Tarah from the Mark Garrison Salon.
