Gyno Anxiety - Page 2

(Hint: Keeping your socks on is a good idea.)

  • If the doctor does a breast exam, she'll move her hands on and around your breasts looking for lumps, and she'll check each nipple.
  • The doctor will press down on your lower abdomen to feel your uterus in its entirety and check for bumps that shouldn't be there.
  • She'll do a quick check of the outside of your vagina, looking for sores or bumps.
  • To make sure the cells in your cervix are normal, a pap smear will be done. The doctor will insert a small metal instrument called a speculum into your vagina. (It may feel a little tight, but it shouldn't hurt. Taking deep breaths and relaxing makes it easier.) The speculum holds the vagina open while the doctor uses a thin instrument to gently remove cells inside your cervix.
  • After she removes the speculum, she will place two fingers in your vagina to feel your ovaries. She may also insert a finger into your rectum to feel the back of your uterus and cervix. (This all takes less than two secs.)
  • At the end of the exam, the doctor should ask if you have any questions. Fire away!
