Oily skin
I've got a problem: My face won't stop shining. Please help me find a cure.
S.P., Madison, WI
Welcome to the oily-skin club. That shine comes from excessive oil secretions, which are usually caused by hormones and genes (thank your mom and dad). And be prepared: It'll get worse during the summer. Fortunately for those of us with oily skin, there are some quick fixes that make a shine-free existence possible. Wash your skin with a gentle, oil-free soap or cleanser. We swear by Johnson & Johnson's Purpose soap (in the blue box), available at most supermarkets and drugstores. Go for an oil-free toner like Almay's Sensitive Care Toner, which will smooth out and tighten up your pores. And apply an oil-free moisturizer, one that provides just the right amount of moisture and gives your skin a matte finish. Obviously, you should be choosing oil-free makeup to cut down on the amount of oil on your skin. We love Cover Girl's Balanced Complexion Liquid Makeup, which contains oil absorbers and gives great coverage. Beware: Your inclination to dry out your skin to compensate for your oil problem is oh-so-wrong. You're actually stimulating your glands, which then protest by producing more oil.
