"The absolute worst time to get a facial is the week before and during your period," says Marcia Kilgore, owner and esthetician at Bliss Spa in New York City. Skin is totally sensitive then, so a facial--with its inherent pimple-squeezing (do not try this at home!)--is akin to tweezing out your leg hairs one by one: ouch! Kilgore believes the best time to get a facial is when you're slightly broken out. Why? Whiteheads are a sign that the bacteria population in your pores has exploded. Forcing the whitehead out could keep it from turning into a full-on zit. Still, most dermatologists will tell you that window of opportunity is hard to catch, and if any squeezing of zits is going to take place, it should be done in a doctor's office with the right instruments, not in a beauty salon with fingers.
